Our pharmaceutical expertise

The Protéalpes brand was founded and is still run by two pharmacists with a passion for sport, nature and nutrition.
The initial idea was to develop products for sportsmen and women that would perform well, but above all would be healthy, and not have a long-term impact on consumers' health.

Health

No additives, no sweeteners, pharmaceutical expertise

This philosophy is still the same today, since for each product developed at Protéalpes, we must have enough scientific hindsight to consider it truly healthy and without any danger in conventional use.

What's more, the founders decided to establish a basic principle for the brand: no additives should be used in the composition of Protéalpes products.

Additives have no nutritional value; they are most often used for product manufacture, preservation or organoleptic characteristics (texture, taste, smell). We believe that, in a sports nutrition context, efforts should be made to offset their use. In our view, these products should be reserved for specific pharmaceutical uses, and not for everyday comfort products such as sports nutrition. Whether as secondary ingredients or even in very small quantities as flavor carriers, additives have no place at Protéalpes.
That said, since these additives have an industrial role to play, we had to find natural ways of replacing them. One of these solutions has been patented and is used daily by our manufacturing teams.

Specific production know-how has been developed to handle products without the use of process aid additives.

Our formulations are supported by medical and scientific publications, and we constantly collaborate with doctors, pharmacists, physiotherapists, dieticians and nutritionists to ensure the safety and proper design of our products.

Lastly, Protéalpes products are being developed and studied as part of a Doctor of Pharmacy thesis, with the support of university professors at Grenoble Alpes University.

Based on scientific recommendations, R&D led by expert pharmacists

We draw on the work of the Australian Institute of Sport, a world reference in sports nutrition in particular, for each of our product developments.

This academic institute, whose information and data are accessible to the general public, lists the majority of nutritional supplements used worldwide and classifies them according to safety (is it healthy, dangerous for the athlete, authorized or not?) and performance (does the supplement really work?) aspects.

In reality, few products are in the first category (class A) of this official ranking, the category of supplements recognized as healthy and genuinely useful for athletes. These include, for example,whey protein for recovery, carbohydrate and electrolyte solutions for exercise drinks, caffeine for pre-workout, creatine...

We have chosen to base our R&D exclusively on the latter, and to offer only class A products from this list. As scientific knowledge is rarely static, Protéalpes formulations are subject to change and adaptation to new recommendations from the scientific community and potential modifications to this classification.

Thanks to these principles and this philosophy, Protéalpes soon began working with professional structures in rugby (XV de France, Top 14, ProD2, Nationale), soccer (Ligue 1, Ligue 2, Nationale), ice hockey (Ligue Magnus) and other team and individual sports.

Raw materials

This was one of the foundations of Protéalpes: using only the highest quality raw materials, to offer nutritional products that stand out from the rest.

Where do our raw materials come from?

Whey protein isolate :

Protéalpes works in partnership with the Union des Producteurs de Beaufort (Savoie, France) to source the protein isolate used in our recovery products. The link is direct, with no intermediaries, and 100% of the proteins are sourced this way.

Protéalpes protein isolate is derived from extensively farmed milk from pastures in the Rhône-Alpes region, in compliance with various PDO and PGI specifications. In addition to the environmental and animal welfare issues associated with intensive or large-scale farming, we know that protein quality is intrinsically linked to the milk from which it is derived, hence our choice of this whey protein isolate from Rhône-Alpes pastures.

In summer, the herds graze freely on alpine pastures, sometimes up to 2,500 m in altitude, where the milk is harvested using mobile milking equipment.

The breeds raised are also unique. These are local breeds, mainly Tarines and Abondances. These cows, unlike the classic high-yield dairy breeds, produce less milk, but are more resistant. They are therefore adapted to the harsh climate and mountain slopes. Milk production is statutorily limited per animal per year. 

Protéalpes is therefore committed to this approach of quality and valuing local produce, as opposed to quantity and high yields.

Other raw materials :

For other raw materials, we source as much as possible from Europe, and check the origin of each of our ingredients, as well as any carriers.

We almost exclusively use certified organic ingredients, as this label guarantees maximum traceability and quality, for a more controlled environmental impact. What's more, we are certified by the Ecocert France organic control organization, which audits us regularly.

All our flavors are developed and manufactured by a single French company, according to our precise needs. We have specifically developed natural flavors with additive-free carriers. Indeed, most flavors (even natural ones) used in the food industry have a carrier that contains additives (preservatives, anti-agglomerating agents such as silicon dioxide, etc.). Although more complicated to work with in blends, and with lower durability dates, from the outset we have used only flavors with additive-free carriers.

We also systematically check each aroma carrier via our supplier's technical data sheets.

Where are our products made?

We have no subcontractors. Production is carefully carried out in-house by our team in Albertville, in the heart of the Alps. A qualified pharmacist is systematically responsible for each production batch. Our production site is located within the Savoie Lactée plant, which filters and produces raw whey powder. Absolutely no chemical processes are used for this protein purification. It is a cold microfiltration/ultrafiltration process, followed by a drying phase without preheating.

This strategic central location in Albertville considerably reduces transport and associated pollution, as well as the time to filtration.

This eco-innovative plant is equipped with methanization technology for its biological waste. This enables it to discharge only water into the natural environment and, above all, to produce almost 3,000,000 kWh per year (more electricity than it consumes).

We have therefore chosen to produce our products in these modern, well-adapted premises, on our own machines whose technology has evolved with our development.

Anti-dope

Anti-doping standards, controlled manufacturing, strict controls

A study1 conducted between 2000 and 2001 on 634 non-hormonal whey protein nutritional supplements sold over the counter in Europe and the USA showed that :

  • On average, 15% of samples are positive for anabolic androgenic steroids (doping products).
  • Up to 25.8% of products are contaminated with these steroids, depending on the country of origin (Europe).

A more recent study2 suggests that over 28% of nutrition products analyzed pose a risk of potential unintentional doping for the consuming athlete.
These studies show the extent of the problems of cross-contamination (accidental or provoked) of sports nutrition products, and raise the alarm about the associated health risks.

At Protéalpes, we comply with standard NF EN 17444 "Prevention of doping in sport - Good development and manufacturing practices to prevent the presence of prohibited substances in foodstuffs intended for athletes and food supplements", to assure athletes that no doping substances are present in the products we sell. Compliance with this standard involves strict controls on suppliers and producers of raw materials, as well as on manufacturing processes.

From a manufacturing point of view, we control the production of our products on our own production site, using our system of internal procedures. With no subcontracting, we can ensure 100% traceability of our products.
