Calculating Average Speed While Running

Updated on May 15, 2026 (20 days ago) by the Protéalpes team of pharmacists

An athlete prepares a drink using Protéalpes whey protein, free of sweeteners and additives, for healthy nutrition.

Calculating your average pace is one of the most useful metrics in running. Whether you’re training for a half marathon, a marathon, a road run, or a trail running session, knowing how to calculate your pace helps you better understand your fitness level, adjust your target pace, and compare your workouts over time.

The tool is intentionally simple: it calculates the distance traveled and the total time, then automatically converts the result to km/h and minutes per kilometer.

It is precisely this dual display that makes the tool so practical. Speed in km/h is more useful when you want to calculate your overall speed, whileaverage pace in min/km is often more intuitive for managing your running pace.

An athlete on the track prepares for recovery with Pro Recovery by Protéalpes, a supplement free of additives and artificial sweeteners.

How is average speed calculated?

The basic formula is very simple:

average speed = distance / time

If an athlete runs 10 kilometers in 50 minutes, their average speed is 12 km/h. The tool can then convert this result into time per kilometer, which in this case is 5 min/km.

This conversion is essential because, in long-distance running, many runners think more in terms of pace than in terms of pure speed.

Saying that you’re running at 12 km/h is the same as saying you’re maintaining a pace of 5:00 min/km. In atraining plan, this immediately helps you determine your pace, design an interval workout, set a jogging pace, or prepare for a specific session.

Why is this tool useful for running?

A pace calculator isn't just for converting speeds. It also helps you better assess your performance. At a glance, athletes can tell if a run was truly consistent, if their pace matches their goal, or if they started out too fast.

This is particularly useful for estimating split times, adjusting a race strategy, and avoiding setting a pace that’s too fast toward the end of a race.

Whether you're running your first half marathon or finishing a full marathon, this simple tip can make a real difference. Many runners start out relying solely on how they feel, whereas having a clear benchmark foryour pace helps you maintain your effort more effectively.

The same applies to ultra-trail and trail running: raw speed varies greatly depending on the terrain, but the relationship between distance, time, and pace remains the foundation of the analysis.

Average speed, pace, and goal

Another benefit of the tool is that it connects different ways of interpreting a performance:

  • average race speed in km/h;
  • average pace in min/km;
  • estimated total time for a different distance;
  • passage time markers.

For example, if you can run at 10 km/h, you also know that you can maintain a pace of about 6:00 min/km. This translates to a 10K in 1 hour, a half marathon in around 2:06, or a marathon in just over 4:13, at a steady pace.

Athlete focused on an athletics track, embodying the Protéalpes spirit: natural, high-quality sports nutrition.

A simple yet very practical tool

This tool is not intended to replace a coach, a VMA test, or an advanced GPS watch. However, it meets a very specific need: calculating your speed, easily converting pace, understanding what a performance result means, and better preparing for your workouts.

In short, whether you want to calculate your speed, determine your pace per kilometer, compare different runs, or set a target pace, this ultra-simple pace calculator is a very handy tool for everyday use.
