Whey protein - No added sugar range

In athletes, protein requirements are higher due to increased muscle catabolism. Appropriate amino acid nutrition is therefore necessary to cover the needs associated with stimulating protein synthesis during the recovery phase of muscular exercise.

Whey cacao is really excellent: neither too sweet nor nauseating, unlike other brands I've tried. As I now consume it every day, I appreciate all the more the absence of sweeteners or superfluous additives in the composition. And, the icing on the protein cake, the ingredients are locally sourced. That's just great!

Whey protein range with no added sugar

No additives - No sweeteners

  • Ideal for those seeking an unsweetened taste
  • Protein-rich, doping substance-free and gluten-free
  • Proteins help maintain and strengthen muscle fibres
  • Optimum recovery
  • Protein isolate obtained mechanically by cold microfiltration/ultrafiltration, no reheating before drying
  • Produced from milk from pastures in the Rhône-Alpes region, manufactured and packaged by Protéalpes in Albertville.

To remain true to our values of Health and Performance, we have decided not to make any concessions, and therefore not to use any sweeteners on this range with no added sugar.

As a result, these muscle nutrition products are suitable for training athletes with a strict sugar program, or those simply looking for a high-quality drink with an unsweetened taste.

After diluting one dose in a shaker with 200 ml of water, the drink contains less than 2% carbohydrates, but just as many amino acids and BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, valine).

Less than 2% carbohydrates, for the same amount of amino acids and BCAAs (leucine, isoleucine, valine)

Why a whey with no added sugars or sweeteners?

This version, with no added sugar or sweeteners, is adapted to the needs of diabetic athletes, or those who don't want a sweet taste in their post-workout or muscle-recovery drink.

Gluten-free and low in lactose, these whey proteins are ideal for the nutrition of athletes who want to add their own sugar and carbohydrate sources, such as maple syrup, coconut sugar, honey...

What are sweeteners and why do most industrial whey products contain them?

Sweeteners are synthetic and/or processed compounds designed to replace sugar in a food product. The reason for this substitution is to reduce the caloric intake of the product in question, while giving it an extremely sweet taste, even on a so-called "zero sugar" product, for muscle nutrition and/or muscle gain. The issue is also financial, since sweeteners are less expensive than sucrose for the same sweetening power.

For many producers of whey protein, isolate, BCAA and protein powder, the addition of a sweetener is necessary to mask the taste of medium-quality proteins.

By adding sweeteners to whey (sucralose, aspartame, steviol glycosides, acesulfame k...), it will have a flavor that is a priori much more conducive to consumption, and therefore to marketing.

Thanks to their low price, these additives are often used in conjunction with others, such as emulsifiers (often soy lecithin), thickeners, colorants...

All Protéalpes wheys are certified additive- and sweetener-free.

Is there any danger in consuming protein powders containing sweeteners?

At first glance, sweeteners have all the qualities of whey enhancers, without the drawbacks of sugar. They have hundreds of times the sweetening power of ordinary sugar, and provide very few calories. However, these "empty" molecules have no nutritional value for athletes, and more and more studies are casting doubt on the safety of these compounds.

In recent years, researchers have been particularly interested in sucralose (E955). This organochlorine is currently one of the most widely used sweeteners, alongside aspartame, in most whey products. Their advice is clear: according to the studies "Sucralose affects glycemic and hormonal responses to an oral glucose load" and "Sucralose, A Synthetic Organochlorine Sweetener: Overview of Biological Issues", this sugar substitute can disrupt metabolism in a number of ways. Repeated intake, for example, can lead to hormonal imbalances, metabolic disorders and disruption of intestinal flora.

The sweetening power of sweeteners is also detrimental to endurance athletes and body-builders. For example, sucralose is up to 700 times sweeter than ordinary sugar, for the same dose. By taking whey protein shakes, you gradually get your brain used to this excessively sweet taste. Gradually, you'll seek out this sweet taste in your daily diet or in other dietary supplements you consume. Paradoxically, by choosing a "sugar-free" but sweetened protein powder, the consumer is encouraged to consume increasingly large doses of sugar.

Can you cook with your wheys?

That's right! This is one of the main advantages of our unsweetened whey proteins. Indeed, synthetic sweeteners like sucralose form toxic compounds when heated, for example during cooking.

With quality whey proteins free of additives and sweeteners, you can easily and naturally enrich your cooking preparations, without the risk of consuming undesirable synthetic compounds.

Même si issue du lait, l’isolat de protéine (poudre de protéines brute) est pauvre en lactose (< 5% de lactose), et en graisse (matières grasses).

These milk proteins are naturally rich in BCAAs and essential amino acids.

Whey protein is ideal for enriching culinary preparations. For post-training use, or as a snack during the day, it's an essential nutritional ally for your body. Its beneficial effects can be felt in muscle recovery, mass gain and weight control.

Why choose a whey without additives or sweeteners?

What are additives and sweeteners?

Additives are substances added to preparations to give them a particular scent, flavor or texture. In the food industry, these compounds have no nutritional value, but determine the aroma or taste of the finished product. Sweeteners (aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame k...), for example, are additives with extremely powerful sweetening properties.

In whey manufacturing, additives can serve many purposes. For protein powders, thickeners and surfactants such as lecithins improve the texture of whey protein in one way or another.

Why avoid whey containing additives and sweeteners?

Given their functions, they might seem perfectly harmless. However, these substances are transformed or totally synthetic products of the chemical industry. Today, although authorized in Europe and France, the long-term impact of these additives on human health and the environment is not fully understood. What's more, the metabolites (products of human metabolism, after consumption) are not all known either, and could present dangers in the event of long-term exposure.

Among the sweeteners used in the food industry, the researchers were particularly interested in sucralose, an organochlorine compound. This substance is one of the most widely used in the whey and other protein powder industries. The articles "Sucralose affects glycemic and hormonal responses to an oral glucose load "1 and "Sucralose, A Synthetic Organochlorine Sweetener: Overview of Biological Issues "2 present the potential adverse effects of sweeteners on metabolism and health. Sucralose is reported to affect glycemic and insulin response, and the gut microbiota, and is thus linked to metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

The sweetening power of sweeteners is also detrimental to endurance athletes and body-builders alike. Sucralose, for example, is up to 700 times sweeter than ordinary sugar. By taking whey shakes, you gradually get your brain used to this excessively sweet taste. Gradually, you'll seek out this sweet taste in your daily diet or in other dietary supplements you consume. Paradoxically, by choosing a "sugar-free" but sweetened protein powder, consumers are encouraged to consume more and more sugar.

Whey with no additives or sweeteners: a guarantee of exceptional quality

Whey is, in essence, a natural food supplement with remarkable nutritional properties. It is therefore a shame to alter its beneficial effects on the body by adding additives. By improving the ultra-filtration and micro-filtration of milk, it is possible not only to improve the texture and flavor of whey, but also to reduce the amount of lactose to almost zero. By offering a product free of additives and sweeteners, with good taste and a pleasant texture, all naturally, Protéalpes proves its commitment to providing you with top-quality proteins.

If you're looking for an especially thick texture, or a sweeter taste, it's perfectly possible to enhance your whey shaker without resorting to sweeteners or thickeners. To do so, you can occasionally mix your whey with a natural carbohydrate source. For example, you can mix your whey in a plant-based milk such as oat or coconut milk, or add peanut butter, honey or maple syrup, favoring natural ingredients with a relatively low glycemic index.

Additives are very common in medicines. However, in the case of protein powders and sports nutrition, their impact is far greater than when consumed as part of a drug regimen. Indeed, whey is a comfort product, designed to be consumed for months or even years on end, for as long as you want to build muscle, maintain muscle mass or recover more effectively. Taking whey over the long term is different, and increases the risks explained above.
