What ingredients should be avoided in protein powders to remain gluten-free?

To remain truly gluten-free, you must avoid: grains containing gluten (wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut) and their derivatives such as flour, semolina, starch, or wheat protein.

Also beware of "catch-all" ingredients that may contain gluten: malt, malt flavors, certain modified starches, maltodextrin from unspecified grains, textured vegetable proteins, thickeners, or "grain mixes."

Finally, be wary of labels that say "may contain gluten" or "traces of gluten-containing grains."

Is whey naturally gluten-free?

Whey itself (whey concentrate, isolate, hydrolyzed) comes from milk and is naturally gluten-free.

The problem comes from flavored whey powders: added flavors, thickeners, malt, cereals, or the risk of cross-contamination in the factory.

The result: some products are perfectly compatible with a gluten-free diet, while others may contain gluten or significant traces of it, hence the importance of reading the list of ingredients and the "gluten-free" labels.

What digestive symptoms are typical of hidden gluten?

In people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, gluten "hidden" in whey can cause bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, or gas.

These symptoms often resemble irritable bowel syndrome: bloated stomach, cramps, poorly formed or foul-smelling stools.

In the long term, repeated exposure in these individuals can also damage the intestinal lining and impair nutrient absorption, leading to fatigue and decreased performance.

Flavorings, thickeners, added grains = gluten?

Yes, these ingredients can introduce gluten into whey that was initially "pure." Flavors such as "cookies & cream," brownie, or muesli may contain wheat, barley, or malt.

Certain thickeners, stabilizers, modified starches, or maltodextrin derived from unspecified grains are also possible sources.

Cereal inclusions (cookie crumbs, cereal pieces, crunchy toppings) are particularly risky, unless explicitly labeled gluten-free or certified as such.
