Proteins to support every goal and stage of a woman's life

Menopause & slow metabolism
Menopause is often accompanied by a loss of muscle mass and an increase in fat mass, leading to a slower metabolism.

Higher protein intake (≈1.2–1.6 g/kg/day), from the general diet and possibly whey or plant proteins, helps maintain lean mass, strength, and resting energy expenditure.

Clinical trials show that protein supplementation (especially whey) improves body composition and function when combined with resistance training, reducing sarcopenia and sometimes abdominal fat (see "Weight loss & tone" below).
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, protein requirements increase to support fetal growth and then milk production.

The priority remains a complete diet (meat, fish, eggs, legumes, dairy products, vegetable proteins); authorities are cautious about powdered supplements because of additives, potential contaminants, and unnecessary doses.

"Simple" sources (whey protein or plant proteins without stimulants, plants, or slimming ingredients) may be compatible during the postpartum period/breastfeeding, under medical supervision, to meet daily requirements if diet alone is not sufficient.
Weight loss & tone
High-protein diets improve satiety, help reduce spontaneous calorie intake, and promote greater fat loss while limiting lean mass loss.

In clinical trials, an intake of 1.2–1.6 g/kg/day (via food + protein powder) promotes better body composition than a low-protein diet with the same calorie intake.

A high-quality powder that is low in sugar and fat can therefore be a practical tool for achieving the recommended intake (for example, a shake for breakfast or as a snack) without excessively increasing calorie intake. But be careful: this is only on condition that you remain within a moderate overall calorie deficit and consult a professional if you have any associated medical conditions.
Sports & performance
For women who exercise (weight training, endurance sports, or mixed sports), a protein intake of 1.4–2.0 g/kg/day is often recommended to optimize muscle mass building/maintenance and recovery.

Meta-analyses show that protein powders (whey, casein, or blends) modestly increase lean mass and strength when resistance training is structured and the baseline intake is insufficient.

Whey, due to its rapid absorption and high BCAA content, is particularly beneficial around training to stimulate protein synthesis. Slower sources (casein, plant blends) may be useful as snacks or at bedtime.

Additional questions

Is whey beneficial during menopause, even without intensive exercise?
During menopause, the recommended protein intake increases (approximately 1.0–1.2 g/kg/day, sometimes more in cases of weight loss or sarcopenia).

Studies show that whey is most effective when combined with resistance training, as it helps preserve lean body mass and strength. Without weight training, whey supplements do not significantly improve muscle mass in women who already have sufficient protein intake.

However, it can be a convenient, low-calorie way to reach target intake levels, especially if the diet is low in animal or plant protein.
What type of protein powder is best suited for women?
Women's protein requirements do not differ fundamentally from those of men of the same weight and activity level: the priority remains the total quantity (≈1.2–1.6 g/kg/day depending on objectives) and the quality of essential amino acids.

Whey (isolate or concentrate) is well documented for muscle protein synthesis due to its high content of leucine and other BCAAs. Plant proteins (peas, rice, mixed sources) are relevant options for vegans or those with lactose intolerance, provided they ensure a sufficient content of essential amino acids.

The choice is therefore based on: digestibility, digestive tolerance, lactose content, amino acid profile, absence of additives, sugar, and goals (muscle gain, weight loss, simple practical supplement for breakfast, etc.).
How much protein powder should you consume per day?
The recommendations refer to totalprotein intake and not specifically to powder.

For menopausal or active women, many authors suggest 1.2–1.6 g/kg/day, or even up to 2.0–2.2 g/kg/day for muscle mass gain in weight training.

The powder is used to supplement what is missing from the diet: for example, a 60 kg woman aiming for 90 g of protein per day can cover 60–70 g through her diet and 20–30 g through 1 to 2 shakes (10–30 g of protein powder each).

Studies on whey supplementation often use doses of 20–30 g per serving, 1 to 2 times a day, with no harmful effects in healthy subjects as part of a balanced diet.
